Enjoy a Spot of Tea…for $6 a Cup

Whether you really love expensive tea or you just want to brag to those around you about your expensive tea – have we got a spot for you! The new loose-leaf tea store in Soho called Le Palais des Thes has the most expensive tea around. You, too, can purchase the 3.5 ounch pouch of handpicked, black, South Korean jukro for the pice of $130 a bag!

This tea will make you approximately 20 cups (yes, that’s over $6 a cup). Never fear, however, because general manager Emery Cooke says it’s worth every cent. As he recently said, it’s “absolutely exquisite.”

It certainly better be for that price!

Juggle Your Heart Out in Soho

jugglingWhether you love to juggle or just want a great location for entertainment in Soho for a day, the Dube Juggling Equipment Store is the place to be. On the third-floor in Soho and owned by Brian Dube, this company has been around since 1975.  Mr. Dube dropped out of NYU years ago and stumbled into the business when he became a juggling addict. As he said, “I was eating, drinking, thinking juggling every minute of my life.”

He’s actually the son of a Maine lumberjack who started building juggling clubs for himself when he heard that it would take six months to have them custom made. At his first juggling convention in Delaware, he sold out of his wares instantly, and a business was born.

Now, he employs nine people in the 5000 square foot loft that he’s been using since 1991. Only 10% of the space is used for sales and walk-in customers, while the other 90% is for manufacturing, storage and office space.

His equipment has been used around the world by professionals by: Cirque du Soleil, Penn and Teller, David Blaine, Ringling Brothers Circus, The Big Apple Circus, Philippe Petit, Viktor Kee and many others.

It’s certainly worth a peak if you happen to be in the area! Or, you can buy from them online.

G-SHOCK Opens in Soho

gshockIf you live in the New York area, now is your time to get your hands on the G-SHOCK watch. They are opening their very first store in the United States – and it’s situated in none other than Soho, on West Broadway. Casio’s G-SHOCK storefront is a side to behold.

The store pays tribute to the 30 year history of Casio, showing a timeline of timepieces that have been released over those many decades. The space includes two levels where one floor will be devoted to the retail space and the second will be a showroom for current collaborations. The walls in the entire space include beautiful work by graphic artist Eric Haze.

Casino already has over 300 stores around the world. This flagship store in the US was a global initiative – and Soho is honored to house this cutting-edge shop. The store opened on November 28th with a small cocktail reception and is open to the public since then!

Grab Your New Adidas Shoes

Now is definitely the time to run to the Adidas Originals Soho store, as they are concluding their 10th anniversary with an amazing celebration. They’ve already had amazing appearances there by Jeremy Scott and A$AP Rocky and now they are about to have a limited edition set up kicks that will rock the fashion world.

Originals will be releasing 150 of each of six colorway shoes. The silhouette is a classic Rivalry Lo one and each colorway will include snakeskin stripes and snakeskin on the heel and the toe box. The NY Rivarly will, therefore, only offer a total of 900 shoes, with each pair sold for $130.00. Certainly, the Originals Soho store will also have other apparel for the mobs that don’t quite get the first 900 pair of shoes!

They’ll be coming to the adidas Originals SoHo store on 136 Wooster Street on September 21. Get ready!

SoHo’s Boutiques

Sarah Easley and Beth Buccini have been best friends since the day they met in the University of Virginia’s freshman dorms. They are also fabulous at choosing designer accessories and clothing for their store located in Soho.  Kirna Zabete – as it is called – originates from the pair’s college nicknames: Kirna for Easley and Zabete for Buccini.  Kirna Zabete offers apparel and more from famous brands such as Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Jason Wu and more.  Thus, fittingly emblazoned on their window is the phrase, “So many designers, so little time.” What is important to Easley is taking what she terms as “fashion risks.” She would rather see her models wear too many bracelets, or mix styles that might quite not match rather than go down the dull route.  As she said, “bad taste is better than no taste.”

But now – as part of The Shops at Target program – a limited edition of Kirna Zabete will be available in local Target stores. It brings a few affordable collections co-created by high end boutiques and Target to its stores.  Other boutiques participating in the program include: Odin, The Curiosity Shoppe and Patch NYC. Kirna Zabete is thus offering close to 100 pieces in its fun, flirty collection, replete with cool mixes of styles, patterns and more offering at local Target stores. As well the collection comprises signature colors of pink, red and teal, and boldly-colored graphic dresses and coats.  The line’s seal is a puckered-lipped kiss.

And that is how the general style of the boutique is, as it seeks to reflect clients’ different moods vis-à-vis how they want to dress each day. It seeks to mix a variety of prints, patterns and colors, “throwing all fashion rules out the window.”

More Color to Come

But Kirna Zabete isn’t the only color array to come to SoHo.  Piperlime – Gap’s online-only fashion boutique – is set to open its first actual store next week in the area too. Measuring 4,000 sq. ft, the store aims to create the same feeling of actually walking into its Piperlime.com virtual counterpart.  The store’s “Color Clashing” trend seems to be right in line with what Kirna Zabete is trying to accomplish.  There will be clothing and accessories, with 800+ items ranging in price from $49 to $600.

The reason for this move is that Gap saw that Piperlime is its fastest-growing online property. While it doesn’t have its own label, it has been seen that a 3D version is vital to ensure a real relationship is created.  Customers will also be given an opportunity to discover new names in a boutique-style environment as opposed to through the computer. A variety of jeans come in colors ranging from classic indigo to snakeskin, floral tapestry and everything in between, spanning 15 brands. And of course, it’s much easier to try stuff on in the store’s four large fitting rooms complete with three-way mirrors than on line!

So for those who love color, fashion and are avid-fans of breaking rules, SoHo seems to be the place to be.

Chobani Yogurt Store Coming to SoHo

Swing by the corner of Prince and West Broadway when you get a chance to check out the new non-frozen-yogurt shop from Chobani. The idea behind this shop is to enjoy Greek yogurt with customized toppings.

They plan to fly in authentic Greek yogurt and to offer customers toppings like coconut, pineapple, Turkish pistachios, dark chocolate chunks and more. Each of the dishes will be served cold, but not frozen.

According to TheRealDeal.com, “The Wall Street Journal reported that Chobani has signed a lease to pay $375,000 per year for a 525-square-foot space at 150 Prince Street, where it plans a fast-food style yogurt bar with Mediterranean-inspired mix-ins…Soho boosters questioned whether the yogurt brand belongs among the upscale fashion brands that have proliferated in the neighborhood, the Journal said. But between the growth of frozen yogurt shops and Dannon’s recent opening of a store in the city, it appears fitting that the trend infiltrates one of the city’s trendiest shopping strips.”

It certainly sounds new…different…interesting. We’re not sure it will take off with the New York crowd, but it’s worth checking it out at least once!

SoHo Drawing Center Finishing Renovations in September

If you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy the Drawing Center, which first opened its doors in 1977 in SoHo, then you’ll be ecstatic to learn about their renovations. The Wooster Street location is getting a $9.6 million expansion and, as director Brett Littman recently announced, they will be reopening The Drawing Center in September.

Architect Claire Weisz, from the New York-based firm WXY Architecture & Urban Design, is leading the renovation. The updated facility will have more exhibition space and public space. As Littman explained in a press release,

“Artists today are redefining the outer reaches of what constitutes drawing — whether they are drawing in cyberspace or on buildings, doing animation, or making marks through the movements of dancers. This space serves that future.”

The new center, opening mid-September, will have offices on the upper floors, an education center, and a new gallery on the lower floor for public gatherings and for exhibitions. Get ready for the first scheduled show featuring the drawings of Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca.

Stepevi Opens Shop in Soho

Whether or not you already love Turkish rugs – you will soon. Stepevi has come to SoHo, and it is as luxurious a brand as you’ll find anywhere. This Turkish rug company is known for its gorgeous, plush textural designs. And SoHo is honored to have them. They’ve just opened their first American store in the neighborhood, joining their showrooms in London, Paris, Milan and Instanbul.

As Aysegul Yurekli Sengor, the managing director and wife of the founder, Cem Sengor, said, “In London, we are located on King’s Road, in Paris at St.-Germain and in Milan at Brera — all of these locations being the hubs for artists, creators and designers. SoHo, in that sense, fits very well.”

Even if you’re not in the market for a rug, it’s worth seeing the 2500 square foot store. Designed by Zeynep Fadillioglu, who designed the Sakirin Mosque in Instanbul, the location will be simply divine, as will the rugs and furniture showcased. They are located at 147 Wooster Street (Houston Street), (646) 629-9933.

Soho Rep Shines Like the Globe Theater

The Ugly One - Soho Rep

You simply can’t find anything more entertaining for the money than the Soho Rep.  The Soho Rep, located at 46 Walker Street, offers $.99 Sundays for its current performances! How fun is that? It’s a throwback of sorts to the Globe Theater. You, too, can be one of the common folks paying for entry at the lowest possible price and standing next to the stage.

Only here, you don’t have to stand. The theater is actually arranged in a strikingly unusual way with five steep rows on each side of the narrow stage.  It’s a dramatic, intimate setting. At the moment, they are showing The Ugly One on February 19th and 26th for only $.99, and it’s even a show worth seeing.

Challenging viewers to consider what really makes someone ugly or beautiful, and what it means to be unique, the performance directed by Daniel Aukin is beautifully orchestrated.  For a bit of culture and some intimate viewing – and an awesome price – Soho Rep is the address!

Stella McCartney Opens SoHo Location

Fashion designer Stella McCartney has packed up her store in the Meatpacking District and set her sights on a new, elegant location. She is now open in SoHo, at her new 5,200 square foot, two-level store. Last Monday evening, she welcomed friends to her new location with a dinner party in the new space. Her Green Street location puts her in the neighborhood with Louis Vuitton, Taschen and Tiffany, among others.

As actress Naomi Watts remarked at the party, “I do know a bit about New York real estate. And I think this store’s a testament to how well she’s doing. In this economic state, people are paring down and she’s thriving.”

As McCartney explained the change, “The reality is our lease was up and we sort of questioned if we wanted to be down there or if we wanted to make a change, so we decided to come here. I’ve always loved SoHo. I love the Meatpacking, too, but I think it was the right time for us to move into this kind of position. Maybe a little more grown up and taking it to the next level really in terms of our neighbors.”
